Abu Dhabi’s infrastructure authority, the Abu Dhabi Projects and Infrastructure Centre (ADPIC), has teamed up with The Boring Company, founded by Elon Musk, to investigate cutting-edge underground infrastructure possibilities throughout the emirate.
Collaboration to Enhance Urban Infrastructure
During LIVEX 2026, this notable partnership was established with the goal of assessing how modern tunneling methods might improve transportation systems and utility services in Abu Dhabi.
With a $56 billion infrastructure portfolio under its management, ADPIC aims to increase urban capacity by utilizing underground space more efficiently and strategically. This move demonstrates Abu Dhabi’s proactive strategy to strengthen its economic competitiveness, prepare for population expansion, and improve the quality of life for its inhabitants and businesses.

Incorporating advanced tunneling techniques could significantly impact Abu Dhabi’s urban planning, easing surface traffic, optimizing land usage, and potentially minimizing environmental effects. By creating underground transportation routes, the city can tackle the challenges posed by rapid urbanization, aligning with the global shift toward smart city development.
For essential utilities, implementing underground channels can safeguard critical infrastructure from environmental factors and simplify maintenance tasks. This approach ensures a more durable and resilient system for vital services, which is key for supporting the long-term needs of a growing city. This is particularly important as Abu Dhabi continues to invest heavily in infrastructure, contributing to a detailed plan for sustained growth and economic diversification.
