Danish design brand Vipp is expanding its best-selling Swivel chair series this September with two new executive models intended for long-term desk use. The Vipp 454 and 455 feature enhanced ergonomics for those working extended hours, and the company has lengthened the backrest and enlarged the seat with extra padding for both chairs. The Vipp 454 is offered without armrests, while the 455 features slender armrests that extend seamlessly into the padded backrest. This update aims to provide better support for users who spend significant time sitting at a desk or in a boardroom setting.
Updated Profiles for the Boardroom
The original Swivel chair has been a successful design for Vipp since it launched five years ago, and the model can now be seen in a diverse array of creative and corporate offices around the world. It combines comfort with an elegant profile and high-quality manufacturing, serving as a functional piece of furniture in various professional environments. Vipp wanted to update the proportions to evolve the design for those who might spend more hours at their workstation. The idea was to expand the Swivel chair family to accommodate different uses and contexts, a goal that the company refers to as “a spin for every space.”

The core of the seat is built from a firm structure of braided belts and wood, wrapped in dense layers of foam, creating a construction that is soft yet supportive over time. This internal construction is mounted on a pivot mechanism that branches out into a four- or five-legged base, which can be fitted with castors or gliders depending on the flooring. The two new chairs also come in a + iteration that includes adjustable seat height and a tilt function. The overall design is defined by a sculptural aluminum frame and smooth rotation, providing a blend of industrial precision and ease of use.
This approach stands in contrast to the rapid turnover often seen in office furniture markets, where models are frequently updated annually to chase fleeting trends rather than improving lasting utility. Vipp’s method suggests that comfort and durability are long-term investments that should evolve slowly through refinements rather than radical rebranding.

A History of Industrial Precision
“The expansion of the series has been a natural evolution, much like many other Vipp collections, adapting over time in response to the different ways we’ve seen customers use our chairs across a variety of settings,” says Kasper Egelund, third generation co-owner and CEO of Vipp. He emphasizes that the brand is driven by longevity rather than speed. “After all, our iconic Vipp bin now comes in six sizes but it took us 87 years to get there.” The company has been known for its expertise in metalwork since 1939, a heritage that informs its current product line.
