A small Victorian living room in West Sussex has been transformed into a lively, Marrakech-inspired space through careful planning and bold design choices. Interior stylist Gemma Gear and her partner took on the project after buying a neglected terrace home, where the living room had remained untouched since the 1970s. The room’s dated appearance and limited space required a strategic approach to maximize its potential while preserving its original features, such as the fireplace and architraves.
Restoring Original Features
The first step was addressing structural updates. The Artex ceiling was replastered, and the original redwood flooring was restored, matching the material used upstairs. Measuring every element became critical—custom-built TV units, alcove shelving, and a precisely sized sofa ensured the space was fully utilized without feeling cramped. “We had our TV unit and alcove shelving custom-made as a result, and triple-checked the size of our sofa to make sure it fitted,” Gear said.
Gear’s design process began with a clean slate: the walls were painted white to create a neutral base. Over the following months, she experimented with colour samples, mixing bold blues and yellows inspired by her travels. “‘Time spent making moodboards of different swatches and samples of the materials you want to incorporate into the room is never wasted,’ she says. ‘It gives you a chance to mix and match until you find a colour combination that you really love.'”

One standout detail was painting the chimney breast in bold colours. The contrast against the white walls added depth and made the room feel more dynamic. Gear also incorporated brightly coloured cushions, throws, and plant pots—a discovery that gave her confidence to invest in a statement blue sofa.
Challenges and Lessons
The project wasn’t without setbacks. An initial floor stain dried unevenly, turning orange, and required sanding and repainting. Despite the hiccups, the final result exceeded expectations. Their dog, Digby, got wet paint on his tail at various times, but they now love how the space has come together.
Gear emphasized that small rooms benefit from a strong focal point. By highlighting the chimney breast and tying accessories to it through colour or texture, the space gained cohesion. “People always comment on it!” she said.

Design Philosophy and Personal Touches in the Living Room Update
The living room’s design reflects Gemma Gear’s background as an interior stylist, inspired by her travels. A colorful pouffe, originally purchased during a trip and brought back in her luggage, became one of the room’s earliest decorative elements.
